Who May Be Sued in Lake Charles City Court?

The person or company being sued may be an individual, a sole proprietor, a partnership, a corporation, or an incorporated association such as a club or association.  The person being sued is called the "Defendant".  In some cases, there may be more than one defendant.  It is important that you properly identify the defendant(s) and then sue the person or company who has caused you damage or injury.

For your suit to be filed in the proper "venue", the following general guidelines apply:

  1. If the defendant is an individual, his "domicile" (synonymous with residence or living quarters) has to be within the boundaries of Ward 3, Calcasieu Parish, LA.
  2. If the defendant is a corporation, its "registered office" has to be located within Ward 3, Calcasieu Parish, LA.  To verify this information, check with the Louisiana Secretary of State, Corporation Division, (225) 925-4704)
  3. If the defendant is an unincorporated association, then the associations principal business establishment has to be located within Ward 3, Calcasieu Parish.
  4. If the defendant is a partnership, then the partnerships principal business establishment must be located within Ward 3, Calcasieu Parish, LA.
